The way Kate Briggs articulates her translation practice is not only beautiful. Much of what she touches on applies directly to the practice of a graphic designer: working with someone else’s material and how that leads you into uncharted territory. Continuing a thread, associating freely, making content your own. Working within the restrictions of a commission. Finding ways to respond to content without making yourself invisible. Playing with authorship. This essay prompted me to look more closely at my own practice, the ingredients I consider essential to it, and how I want to position myself as a graphic designer.
